Food Stamp Nutrition Education

FSNE is a set of learning experiences designed to promote healthy eating behaviors, active lifestyles and other nutrition-related behaviors conducive to health and well-being for those receiving or eligible to receive Food Stamps. Nutrition education activities are based on the USDA’s 2005 Dietary Guidelines for Americans and MyPyramid Food Guidance System.

The Food Stamp Nutrition Education Guiding Principles, published by USDA/FNS in 2005, describe the overarching purpose and goals of FSNE. The FY2009 Food Stamp Nutrition Education Plan Guidance contains more technical and detailed explanations of the intended structure and delivery of FSNE. This guidance is published on an annual basis. In Pennsylvania, FSNE programming is delivered according to three target audience specific tracks.

FSNE focuses on general nutrition for wellness and primary disease prevention, and is not intended to provide nutrition consultation for management of chronic diseases such as diabetes, hypertension, or obesity.
